With statistics suggesting that 40% of Canadian women will develop cancer during their lifetime, the importance of the efforts of the Women's Healthy Environment Network's are clear. The Network provides women with the knowledge and confidence to take ownership of their health and practice primary prevention. Their work in environmental health advocacy and outreach are important and deserve continued recognition and support from the broader community.

Long before it was trendy, the women of WHEN were asking the awkward questions and digging for answers: why is there so much cancer? Why is there so little funding to search  for the causes? Why spend so much effort running after a cure when we don’t even try to prevent cancer? Why doesn’t anyone notice that it’s the huge mega-polluting corporations that dreamed up “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”?I honour the women of WHEN for their  passion and their  integrity. I thank them for their devotion to the well-being of our planet.

Elizabeth May’s words of support to WHEN

Elizabeth.jpg

Elizabeth Evans May, O.C., M.P., is a Canadian Member of Parliament, environmentalist, writer, activist, lawyer, and the leader of the Green Party of Canada. On May 2, 2011, she became the first elected Green Party Member of Parliament in Canada. She is also the former executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada.*As WHEN's Matron of honour, Elizabeth wrote:

I am proud to add my testimonial to the work of WHEN - Women’s Healthy Environment Network. Prior to my life in partisan politics, as Executive Director of the Sierra Club of Canada, we frequently worked in coalition with WHEN.  I continue to value the amazing work of WHEN in increasing awareness of the links between women’s health and the environment, and between empowering women and the health of the environment itself. Over the last nearly two decades, WHEN has provided solid, well-researched information to inform and inspire. I am very pleased to see the latest campaign for the Cancer Prevention Challenge. We see millions donated to finding the cure for Canada, and thousands of us don our pink sneakers to run for the cure.  Meanwhile, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It does not challenge the status quo to seek a cure (and finding one is critical.) Meanwhile, allowing known carcinogens to be used in our food, our cosmetics, and other household products is grossly irresponsible. Thanks to WHEN for continuing in the forefront.  It is my fervent hope that the philanthropic community will invest in WHEN so that a more balanced perspective on health and the environment can emerge as policy at all levels of government.
